The MG6 was among some very well respected competitor products in winning its first UK award this year at the What Car? Magazine Automotive Awards ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 11 January 2012. The Security Award was presented to Dave Lindley who heads SMTC UK, the engineering team behind the MG6, who said afterwards… “We’re delighted to have had the work of our UK engineers recognised in our first new product introduced into the UK. Our products have won awards in China, the home of our parent company, and we are sure that as our products become progressively established and recognised in the European market, that this award will be the first of many in the future”.
Judges commented, “This year, we were looking for a manufacturer that has demonstrated the greatest effort to improve security, either through a particular innovation or a sheer determination to design out crime. MG’s new hatch stood out for us. The MG6 has been bolstered with the industry’s highest-rated alarm and immobiliser system, complete with perimeter detection. Meanwhile, body security has been fortified with first-press double locking, and vehicle identification enhanced with markings.”
Chas Hallett, What Car? Editor-in-Chief said, “MG is a well-known brand to British buyers, but its engineers had to start from scratch on many of the security features of its latest model. A top five-star rating from Thatcham is as good as it gets, so MG deserves real credit for achieving that from a ‘standing start".
Industry awards of this sort are not easy to win given the very strong product competition in the UK and European markets. Of the 17 awards made at the event, 11 went to German manufacturer groups.
