On Saturday 20th April MG announced the European version of the MG3 (MG3 EU) at the International Shanghai Auto Show, the first model of which has already been successfully launched in the Chinese market.
This was the first of several publicity events planned in the run up to the start of MG3 EU production.
The car has been designed by the SMTC UK Design Team in Birmingham, and the leader of the UK team, Martin Uhlarik (Vice- Director Design), was on-hand at the Press Launch in Shanghai.
The exterior changes include a new front bumper with signature shaped day-light running lamps and a more prominent MG Badge. The new form of the bumper also reflects a progression of the MG Design Language seen on MG6 & MG5. There is also a new body kit comprising of side skirts, rear diffuser and tailgate spoiler. To complete the car, it has 16” diamond cut alloy wheels (inspired by those seen on MG Concept 5) coupled with an improved stance to be in keeping with European customer tastes.
Visually the overall aim was to draw inspiration from the character of MG Zero and to be a spiritual successor to the successful MG ZR.
SMTC UK has developed the engineering and dynamics of the car to meet the needs of consumers, the roads and Legislation in Europe. Many members of the team were previously involved in the MG ‘Z’ cars which were acclaimed for their dynamics. More details of the extent of the engineering specification for Europe will be updated closer to the UK Launch.
Reaction to the car, following the reveal, has been very positive. An example of this is an article on Autocar’s website ‘The best of the Shanghai Motor Show 2013’, where MG3 featured in the top 10 launches along with the MG CS concept. MG is the only Brand to have two models featured in this list!
