OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB  
To be responsible for Operational functions of the European Design Studio, whilst working in partnership with creative design teams, project, engineering, and SMTC China.  Ensuring high quality, efficient delivery of exceptional automotive product design, in order to achieve recognition as a core element of the 'The Leading Automotive Technical Centre in Europe.'
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES. 
Leadership, management and planning of operation of Design studio activities, processes and interfaces.
Leadership and management of Digital Design/VR and modelling functions including capability, capacity, and facility planning aligned to ensure projects, timing and development to be ‘world class.’
Lead design studio resources, project budgets, capital expenditure and facility planning process in order to promote efficient and highest possible quality, delivery standards.
Recruit, retain and develop a high quality/high value Design Operation leadership team, with a delivery mode with inherent values of Passion, Accountability, Professionalism, Empowerment, and Integrity.
Lead, inspire and champion a values led, high performance operating culture where team members are empowered and encouraged to deliver the Vision using the most effective and efficient delivery mode, to achieve innovative, appropriate, high quality, high-value and timely design output.
Assist in leading the planning, deployment and measured management of the design team's resources, and partnerships, in order to optimise the value and capacity of Design team.
Management, plan and lead development of Design Studio facilities and assets to achieve continuous improvements in output/presentation quality, visibility with intent to enhance the value to the global business.
Responsible for Design process, and interface to SMTC UK Programme Office, to ensure high quality project status reporting.
Act as member of the Design ‘top-team’ in order to ensure consistent leadership and communications to the business, whilst working with and supporting colleagues to ensure highest quality standards and delivery.

Assist Design Director with development of team leadership, management and planning.
Overall responsibility of Design facility strategy planning and maintenance.
Develop innovative and pioneering design processes and tools.
Given the degree of interaction with the SAIC team in China, this role will involve regular overseas travel and require flexible working in line with business demand.
 
 
SCOPE OF THE JOB  
Team incorporating Digital Design /VR, Clay/CNC, Design Programme Management, Design studio operation and planning, design supplier management
Senior Management role within European Design Studio jointly responsibility for development of Design team capability planning and development
Design studio facility of 2000m2 with in-house modelling milling and VR capability.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 
The Senior Manager Design Operation will have line direct management responsibility for Manager Digital Design/VR, Manager Modelling and Studio, and dotted line responsibility for Design Programme Management.
 
The Senior Manager Design Operation will liaise and consult with Director Programme Office, and SAIC Design China Programme Management, and further administrative functions within SMTC UK (purchasing, facilities, HR, finance, IT etc) on the strategic interface and planning.
 
 
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED 
The successful candidate should have a recognised and proven track record managing Digital Design /VR, Clay/CNC and Design Programme Management teams, at least 5 years experience.
Significant experience within an Automotive Design Operations environment, at least 10 years experience.
Proven ability to monitor and evaluate the creation of physical models and their presentation, providing the models to the appropriate project level and ensuring the required quality of the work.
Knowledge of Operational and Project Management tools and techniques, demonstrated through successful delivery of previous projects (planning, costing, risk mgt, monitoring and control, etc).
Significant experience of team leadership and staff development.
Excellent knowledge of the design process and ability to lead process modification and application.
Advanced programme management experience, at a senior level.
Excellent IT skills & experience of appropriate software applications (MS Office; Project etc).
Detailed understanding of CNC machine principles and processes.
Robust strategic planning ability.
Experience of Supplier management and negotiation.
Knowledge of ‘Gateway’ derived project management processes.
Excellent presentation skills (to include some PR).
Excellent communication skills with design team and senior management, especially with Shanghai colleagues based both in UK and China.
Highly developed organisational & prioritisation skills.
Creative, Confident, Passionate, Inspiring, Open-minded.
Flexible, committed and motivated to deliver, especially within a small team environment.
The ability to operate effectively in a multi cultural environment.
International air travel will be an occasional but essential part of role. 
Design for Six Sigma knowledge or qualification required – full training will be provided by the company

HOURS OF WORK 
 
The employee is required to work 37 hours per week, based on a working week of Monday to Friday. Monday to Thursday 08:00am to 16:45pm and Friday 08:00am to 12:00pm.
