OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB  
 
Technical and team leadership of the Calibration & OBD teams within SMTC UK Powertrain Integration, for product delivery from concept to production.
Leading and directing the use of appropriate tools to deliver both engine calibration and Powertrain electronic Integration systems 
Responsible for developing plans to ensure all Calibration and Electronic System Integration activities are conducted within either GPDP or GVDP schedule to meet the requirements of the SOR / VTS.
To manage, motivate and develop capability of engineers within the team, to ensure Business targets are achieved
 
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES. 
 
Ensuring Base Calibration and OBD plans and specifications are released to support all technical and build requirements in line with SOR / VTS targets.
Driving forward innovation, best practice – including lessons learnt - and ensuring legislative targets are met through leading Development Reviews and Project Reviews
Development and delivery of robust Statement Of Requirements to meet system and vehicle expectations, as given in the Vehicle Test Specifications
Initiation and support of RFQ preparation / RFQ responses as required with the Calibration & OBD engineers.
Creation of Roles and Responsibilities / RASICs to ensure correct work split between SMTC and relevant suppliers.
Performing of regular technical reviews with own team and other CoC’s for effective project delivery.
Regular project review meetings with global suppliers and SMTC.
Support of competitor benchmarking activities to identify technology routes / driveability / emissions benefits etc.
Manage the Calibration and OBD teams effectively, to ensure a balanced workload / skill usage across the teams, whilst promoting an enthusiastic working environment.
Work with Powertrain and vehicle project teams to ensure our test plans our accurate and reflect the correct levels of resource, budget and facilities.
Manage and delegate technical queries from SMTC China engineers and promote / provide SMTC China engineer training requirements as requested.
Keep abreast of New Technologies and test techniques through attending symposium and training.
Developing skills through coaching and identifying and implementing training requirements within the team.
Provide the PTEC Senior Manager with technical status reports, design direction and legislative guidance as required
To provide a mentor role to Chinese engineers providing technical advice, support and guidance.
 
 
SCOPE OF THE JOB  
 
To ensure delivery of EMS and TCU calibrations for allocated projects, which meets the required VTS: timing ; budget
Driving forward innovation and best practice – including lessons learnt - and ensuring legislative targets are met through leading Calibration methods and practises
Ensuring robust specifications are released to support all technical and build requirements in line with VTS / ETS (PDS) targets.
Provide the Powertrain Senior Manager with technical status reports, technical direction and legislative guidance as required.
Initiate and run technical reviews for effective progress tracking and project delivery including ensuring rigorous reviews of TIR’s / BIR’s / FIR’s etc are undertaken.
Attend and contribute to Global supplier and Project Review Meetings
Developing skills through coaching, identifying and implementing training requirements within the team.
Liaise with all vehicle teams to ensure programme milestones are met
Lead the development and testing programmes for International Programmes work-stream with External Service Providers, Suppliers and with In-House facilities to ensure correct procedures and facilities are utilised.
Ensure project sign-off criteria are in place in support of Engineering Sign-off activities, highlight any deviation from plans and instigate recovery actions.
Fully support technical responses to SMTC China and SMTC China engineer training in the UK.
Keep abreast of New Technologies and test techniques through attending symposium and training.
Responsible for enforcing   Best Practice and latest industry technology and techniques
Leading Bench-marking activity for all Powertrain Electronic System functions within the International Programmes work-stream
Responsible for developing plans to ensure all applications activities are conducted within both GVDP and GPDP schedules and to meet the requirements of the VTS / ETS (PDS)
To provide a mentor role to Chinese engineers providing technical advice and guidance
Leading Innovation and International Programmes activity for all Powertrain calibration and OBD activities
Manage the running of a calibration database tool
 
 
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED 
 
A wide range of practical engine calibration experience, with at least 10 years experience and 4 successful full life cycle product developments.
Ability to work under challenging and demanding conditions to provide positive solutions, when given urgent timescales or budget constraints via senior management teams.
Proven team leadership / man management skills within a Calibration and Electronic System Integration team environment.
Excellent IT skills & high level ability of appropriate software applications (INCA, Excel, MS Project, PPT etc). – (Mat Lab preferred)
Minimum HND or equivalent in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering.
Structured and logical approach to problem solving
Management qualifications an advantage, but not essential.
Technical report writing and creation of high quality presentation material.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact at all levels within the organisation.
An enthusiastic, driven and focussed team player.
Full / clean driving licence – advanced driving or driver training / test track experience an advantage.
Substantial experience of working around the world for climatic activities, both for testing and team leadership / programme management.
Ability to work with different systems and cultures
Prepared to work overseas (including China) as the business needs require - this may involve up to 6/8 week assignments at any one time.

Close working relationships with other departments and senior managers both in UK and China
 
 
HOURS OF WORK 
 
The employee is required to work 37 hours per week, based on a working week of Monday to Friday. Monday to Thursday 08:00am to 16:45pm and Friday 08:00am to 12:00pm.
