The Company’s global engineering team (SMTC) comprises:
- SAIC Motor Technical Centre - China (SMTC CN) based in Anting, just outside Shanghai
- SAIC Motor Technical Centre - Nanjing (SMTC NJ) based in the city of Nanjing
- SMTC UK
These three Technical Centres operate as one family, with fully integrated management structures, organisations, planning processes and common global IT systems, software, and strategies to ensure seamless technical operations across 6,000 miles and 8 hours time difference.
In 2005 when the technical team in China was still being created and the numbers limited, the operating base was at Jinqao in Pudong province. SMTC UK at the time was based in Leamington Spa and Coventry, and the two teams were being grown in parallel to meet the increasing engineering needs. Both teams outgrew their existing locations and in 2007, SMTC CN relocated to a new purpose-built Technical Centre in Anting, and in 2008, SMTC UK relocated to Longbridge in Birmingham. From the merger of SAIC Motor and Nanjing Automobile Corporation in China, an existing third Technical Centre joined the global team early in 2008. The interchange of engineers between technical centres has become normal operating practice, and the UK for instance has around 25 engineers permanently stationed in Anting on long term overseas contracts.
The total number of engineers now in the global team is well over 2,000, with approved plans to expand to 3,600 in the foreseeable future. Virtually all of this expansion is at Anting, where the buildings and facilities on site continue to develop. Among the most recent facilities to be completed is a large Design Studio which will operate in collaboration with the smaller but expanding Design Studio in the UK. The growing capacity of the global technical team reflects the ambition of the company for global volume and market growth.
